Hi there!

My name is Haley. I'm a 19 year old Centre College student, spending my summer as a Disciples Home Missions intern at a place in Louisville called UrbanSpirit.

I got this opportunity through a really awesome program at Centre called the Bonner Foundation. Bonners do 10 hours of community service a week and 2 summers of service. My time at UrbanSpirit is my first summer of service.

UrbanSpirit is a lot of things...
But right now I'm just going to tell you that it is a poverty emersion experience which allows people to see how our American system really works...and most importantly what it is really like to be poor. I'll be finding out more about the nature of UrbanSpirit and its roles in both the lives of those in the Portland Community and the individuals who go through the simulation throughout the summer.

I'm blogging my experience as a DHM intern not only for the benefit of Bonner, but also so that you (yes, you) may get to know UrbanSpirit and perhaps consider going through the simulation yourself or supporting the program through other means (like cash...or just spreading the word around). So, I hope you'll follow my journey throughout the summer as I discover new things about the world we live in!

  5. Love, love, love the blog. I just wanted to say one, you are missed; two, I have new chocolate in my dish; and three, I am saying little prayers throughout the day that you are safe, growing in spirit, and happy. Love, Libby
